FOCUS: Sylvia's Super Sub Shop

Sylvia Bennett and son, Greg Kargenian welcome you to Sylvia's.

“Treat a person the way you like to be treated” is Sylvia Bennett’s philosophy -- a philosophy that has brought her 39 years of business success with Sylvia’s Sub Shop. Bennett, 69, and her son Greg Kargenian serve award-winning food to the hungry residents of Allen Park.

Business history

Sylvia’s and ex-husband, Mike, formed a business partnership with a third party to own and run the Super Sub Shop. After two years the three-person partnership failed, and the restaurant became “Mike and Sylvia’s”.

Then in 1983 it became simply, Sylvia’s. For 39 years, it has always been at the same Allen Park location: 4531 Allen Road.

“It fell into my hands,” she explained. “I took a chance.”

Sylvia's story

After 50 years, Bennett is still an Allen Park resident. She began working different jobs when she was just 14 years old -- as a cashier at a shoe store, dime store, and other odd jobs. She attended Fordson High School in Dearborn.

And after a few minutes of talking with Sylvia, it's obvious that she has a lot of pride in her community and in her country.

Services

Famous for subs and pizzas, don’t miss out on Sylvia’s delicious jumbo salads, or wing dings done to perfection.

Sylvia’s is very selective on the meats they use. Unless it is pure 100% lean and can meet their high standards, they will send it back. Vendors know that they cannot pass off any less to them.

Staff

Sylvia gives much of the credit for success to her outstanding staff – especially Donna and Mo who have served at Sylvia’s for 35 and 30 years respectively.

Awards

Sylvia’s has received News-Hearld awards that cover most of the menu: tacos, tuna salad, Captain (Antipasto) salad, and of course pizza and subs. They also have received Channel 4’s Best of the Best Award.

Community

Sylvia’s supports any and all local sports teams, such as baseball and hockey at Cabrini and City leagues. She is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Family

Sylvia is married to Ardys Bennett. She enjoys her two daughters and son, and her six grandchildren ranging from 5 to 25 years.
