”Z” is the mastermind behind Silver Spoon’s great success. |

Meet the Silver Spoon’s proud owner Ziad Nakad. Ziad, or “Z”, received an interior-decorating degree in Syria, his homeland, before he came to America pursuing the American Dream on his brother’s recommendation. On July 3, 1993 he arrived at Metro Airport, put on an apron, and started busing tables at his uncle’s Westland restaurant.
“I worked about 120 hours a week for about eight months,” he says smiling. “Then I got a day off.” He continued to work there for a total of three years. It was during this time he met his head cook, Carl Phillips, who to this day prepares the Silver Spoon dishes. Nakad then worked the next three years as a carpenter – his hidden talent and passion -- for a local construction company.
Before Silver Spoon, Nakad owned two other small restaurants in Southfield and Plymouth. The Silver Spoon at that time was vacant and very run down.
“Everyone told me not to buy it,” Nakad says. “They said it would not be successful, but my brother and family supported me.”
He did a lot of the carpentry work in the restaurant, and next time you’re in there, take a moment to admire it – including the newly remodeled banquet room.
The Silver Spoon is more than food
If you’ve never been to the Silver Spoon Restaurant, you’re really missing out on the award-winning soups, hot fresh rolls, cleanliness, smoke-free environment, and outstanding customer service.
The banquet room seats up to 80 people for funeral luncheons, meetings, small weddings, and showers. And, it now even serves as a wireless Internet café.
Throughout the restaurant is an impressive collection of silver spoons and plates -- all gifts from his customers.
Service is more than a smile
The American home-cooked breakfasts, lunches and dinners are always fresh, served in hearty portions, and modestly priced.
And when you’re in the Spoon, you’ll see “Z” welcoming his guests with a warm smile and a hug – and again as they leave. It’s like you’re visiting family. Nakad loves kids because, “they’re my future customers,” he quips.
And if you have a special food order, it’s no problem for Phillips. Even if it’s something they don’t have, they’ll get it. The popular fresh breakfast bar often includes a homemade cake, or unique fruit.
Each holiday is celebrated in a very special, homey and festive fashion. We’re talking live reindeer, live camels, Sponge Bob, Santa, Halloween costumes, to name a few.
Silver Spoon also provides catering and carry-outs.
Coming soon, Silver Spoon will provide home-delivery during the winter months. Also, watch for “Last Tuesday Culinary Diversity” where different ethnic meals will be presented. Look for pig roasts, lamb roasts, goat roasts, and even Brazilian cuisine.
You can hire good help
Nakad’s impeccable staff meets his high standards. The staff of 27 includes his brother-in-law the chef, Phillips the head cook with 27 years experience, and 7 or 8 people that have been with him since day one.
His dad hand-picks the produce and his mom cooks for special events. “The kibby was awesome,” Phillips chimes in.
Nakad humbly credits his staff, his customers, and above all, his family for Silver Spoon’s great success.
